THE MYTH OF SISYPHUS
Esta edição do clássico de Albert Camus, O Mito de Sísifo, propõe uma experiência de leitura análoga às ideias apresentadas pelo escritor. Os quatro capítulos principais iniciam-se nas primeiras páginas, um a seguir ao outro, marcando a ordem que orienta o resto da paginação. Se alguém decidir ler o livro de forma sequencial de páginas deparar-se-á com a estrutura intercalada dos capítulos (A-B-C-D-A-B-C-D…) Tal como Sísifo, que sobe a montanha carregando uma pedra que rola para a base quando este atinge o cume, condenando-o a subir a mesma montanha eternamente, o leitor que pretenda ler o texto pela ordem correcta terá de chegar várias vezes ao “fim” do livro, recomeçar no ponto de partida o capítulo seguinte e atravessar as mesmas páginas para (voltar a) acabar. Por fim, um apêndice ao texto surge como um quinto capítulo que se inicia, de pernas para o ar, no final do livro, correndo no sentido contrário do restante texto. Cada capítulo usa uma fonte tipográfica diferente que acentua o carácter absurdo do livro. Quando confrontado com este desafio de leitura, qualquer pessoa tem perante si duas hipóteses: a desistência, ou aquilo que em O Mito de Sísifo seria o suicídio, ou a insistência na leitura, aquilo que Camus advoga como uma revolta legítima perante o absurdo do mundo, e neste caso do livro.
This edition of the classic book The Myth of Sisyphus by Albert Camus proposes a reading experience that reflects the ideas proposed by the author. The four main chapters are initiated in the first pages, one after the other, marking the order that guides the remaining pages. If one decides to read the book in a sequential order of pages he will face an interleaved structure of chapters (A-B-C-D-A-B-C-D…) Like Sisyphus, who climbs a mountain pushing a stone that roles down each time he reaches the top, deeming him to climb that same mountain for all of eternity, the reader who wants to read the text in its correct order must reach the end of the book several times, restart at the beginning to find the next chapter and go through the same pages he did before. Lastly, an appendix to the text appears as a fifth chapter that starts upside down in the last pages of the book, running in the opposite direction of the rest of the text. Each chapter uses a different font as to accentuate the absurd character of the book. When facing this reading challenge any reader will have two choices: quitting, or what is referred in The Myth of Sisyphus as suicide, or insisting in reading, what Camus would call a legitimate revolt at the absurd of life and in this case of the book itself.
