Acropolis Museum, Athens

The new Acropolis Museum in Athens offers a new interpretation of the archaeological site.

The Acropolis of Athens had a long and troubled construction. What we see today is the result of complex restorations that took place throughout the XX century; those interventions were functional to the construction of an image and identity.

The project of the new Acropolis Museum wants to make visitors aware of the long and complex history of the evolution of the acropolis showing traces of archaic, Mycenaean and periclee external walls. The desire to show those ancient traces guide the path inside the museum and highlights, hosting the restoration workshops (which for years have been placed in the container yard and block the view of the monuments), the long process of restoration of the monuments.

The entrance of the museum runs along the foundations of the Parthenon and introduces the first large void created at the south-east of the temple. This large room en plein air shows the grandeur of the construction and creates a space of decompression after the long ramp. The route continues in two exhibition rooms and, through a tunnel created on the Mycenaean walls, ends in the reconstruction of the sanctuary of Pandion.

The fil rouge of the rooms is the unique relationship that each ruin has with light.
The zenithal light in each room sprays the ruins and guide the visitors through the exhibition.

The project incorporates both the will who founded the ancient acropolis: the will of the architect of "adding to the rocks" is shown through the rediscovery of the ancient walls, while the will of the sculptor is resumed in the act of digging the rock of the Acropolis and create a hypogeum architecture.

The project is described by sequences of space and narrated through collages of inspirational photos.
