Trans Day of Remembrance 2014

On behalf of the LGBT Center of Raleigh (and the newer LGBT Center of Durham) I created the following flyers, advertisements, posters, and social media graphics for Transgender Day of Remembrance 2014. The nationwide candlelight vigil remembers those lost to anti-trans violence, primarily trans women of color. I sought a design respectful of the somber nature of the event, while interesting and trendy enough to attract attention and be doubly suitable for the Night of Visibility celebratory benefit afterwards. Drawn ribbon type on a chalkboard texture reminded me of the chalk messages and calls-to-action written on sidewalks during such events of mourning, solidarity, and spirit!
As far as color choices, the blue, pink and white come from the trans* pride flag, and the yellow represents the vigil flames in the darkness of night.
Durham has a large Spanish-speaking community, so of course a Spanish flyer was necessary!
The Night of Visibility afterparty was intended to not only raise our spirits back up after an emotional and difficult vigil, but also to raise funds for the new LGBT Center of Durham opening in the coming year.
This black and white ad was featured in the local free weekly magazine, INDY Week.
