My favorite anomalies on earth have always been caves and oceans, so I took my two favorite animals from each (the bat, and turtle) to inspire the structure of my creature. I wanted to capture the environment of the ocean and a cave in my piece, so I took characteristics of both to create an oceanic cavern. I used Pinterest to gather basic concepts for eyes and other textures I could use for my creature. Through the tools from Illustrator, a great deal came together that I would never have expected. Just simply building shapes and seeing how they look together goes a long way, something I could have never achieved on paper. Utilizing technology has been a very important part in assembling the scene and my creature.

Not having this technology would make the process much more problematic. I’d have to plan everything out very sensibly before I put it on paper, because I can’t simply undo it with the click of a button. It would take significantly longer because all of my strokes would have to be very precise, and I couldn’t use a shape builder tool to construct the foremost features of my creature. On paper, the only way to see what doesn’t work is try something only to have to start over. You can hide a layer if isn’t satisfactory, or just tweak it with your tools. I have so many abstract ideas I could never capture on paper, but when given powerful drawing software it lets me express my creativity in a whole new way.

After spending a prolonged period of time studying the works of others, I developed a basic theme I wanted my monster to follow. I initially had planned to make something a bit more demonic, and dark, but after looking at vector drawing of both bats and turtles, I took my desired traits of both to craft my monster. Overall, I’m very pleased with the way my drawing turned out, I had a lot of help from my peers, and from you. Through constructive criticism, I fixed most of the impurities in my drawing, and made an environment that caters to the style of my creature. I executed a color scheme that was much more aquatic, and vibrant. I think I did a good job of developing my monster through its traits, the work speaks for itself.
