Issue: Plastic Pollution

Water pollution is one of the main environmental issues that affect New Zealand and the rest of the globe. One of the causations of this is plastic waste. Although the ocean covers two-thirds of the surface of the Earth, it is surprisingly vulnerable to human influences such as dumping of plastic waste. The environmental impacts resulting from the buildup is huge and increasing. Today, billions of plastic materials can be found in swirling convergences making up about 40 percent of the world’s ocean surfaces. Plastic pollution has a direct and deadly effect on wildlife. Thousands of seabirds and seal turtles, seals and other marine life are killed each year after ingesting plastic or getting entangled in it. Plastic doesn’t just hurt marine species, but it is also harmful to humans.

When creating this poster I wanted the design to be simple and straight forward, making the communication easy to understand. Simple vector imagery representing objects such as bottles, utensils, plastic bags and more was what I believed to be the best way to get the intended message across, as these symbols could be recognized no matter what country the viewer was from.

The purpose of this poster is inform people of how bad water pollution is becoming, and that this kind of pollution can have serious economic and health impacts from this human activity. It is not the initial intention to throw waste directly into the ocean like the imagery in the poster is suggesting, however after bad habits societies have adopted, for example not wanting to find a rubbish bin, or letting a few pieces of trash get carried by the wind, these individuals may think nothing will happen. However we are the major problem to the pollution of the water. This poster is to try and change the mindset of plastic consumers, to stop the impact of pollution.
