The rest of the kitchen consisted of a quartz worktop and high gloss grey units. I suggested a slab of oak would add additional texture and warmth to the room whilst providing a practical surface that will be used throughout the day. 

 

The slab was cut square on two edges with the other two edges hand-planed and sanded smooth as the family of four will be using the island for breakfast and occastional meals.

 

No chance of the little nippers messing up the oak at breakfast time as it's been treated with an incredibly hard wearing wax oil.
