Killifish (Nothobranchiidae)

Between 2013 and 2014, we were commissioned by the UBO - Academy of Science in Brno, to create a series of animation inserts for a documentary film series. While the series feature a number of Czech Scientists who are traveling around the world exploring the genetic codes of different species, the whole project aims to promote the development of Czech science and increase young people's interest in science and increase the attractiveness of scientific careers.

The very first animation insert mainly focuses on the Nothobranchiidae killifish which are found in mud pools on the plains of Africa. These species have a life cycle which lasts only a year long. As long as they are grown enough, they start laying eggs which stay inactive under the mud during the entire dry season.
