This is my Final Project for my third year as an architecture major. This was a 6 week project, from design phase to final layout. The program was to design a master plan for the 2016 Olympic Games in Chicago with a given site, (the old Michael Reese Hospital site). We worked in groups of three one person exploring the idea of a main transportation node, one person working on the Olympic athlete housing, and one person designing the Aquatics Venue. My program was the Aquatics Venue. In beginning this designing process it was my goal to create a venue that allowed every type of occupant to interact and experience the spaces differently. Osmosis was a key word I used to convey my idea, A diffusion or funneling of something from one state to another. A concept in large venues is moving large amounts of people from one space to the next smoothly, this is the osmosis. In my funnel diagrams I present the different paths that the occupants take depending on their purpose within the given space. For example the athletes have their own entrance and their space is elevated above the common path, as to create hierarchy among the ranks of occupants.
A second theme that I wanted to convey in my design was that of modulation, this comes from an understanding of the context and simple function of the site. The pictures below are ones I took on a visit to the site, the shopping cart, rails over the bridge and the tractor-trailers. These inspired me to look into a modular pattern for creating a grid and facade. In order to keep this modulation from being arbitrary I needed to develop a dimension for the modular. The idea came to me that since this is an aquatic venue that I should look into modulation of water. The frequency of water ripples was the premier idea that led me to develop a 11'x33' module. These numbers were based on the length of my site and the time and pitch of "water ripples as they would stretch out across my site. The sketch below showing the "crossword" pattern is a result of the modular form. I designed several of these sketches and over-lay them to create floor plates as well as integration into the context. The patterning of the Black modules on the sketch are patterned in order to create dialogue with one another as to not be arbitrarily placed onto a grid.
The next step was to infill programming into the spaces created. This was rather difficult to do based upon the stipulations, codes, and ADA requirements set up by my professors, as well as the IOC (International Olympic Committee).
