At the base of Tatipa Hill in the northern suburbs of Lhasa, Sera Monastery is dedicated to the Gulukpa or Yellow Hat sect of Tibetan Buddhism.
Built in 1419, Sera translates as 'Wild Rose', so named as the hill it was built beneath was in full bloom at the time.
As part of their study, Lamas must participate in debates on Buddhist scripture. In a battle of words a variety of gestures are used, including the clapping of hands to push their adversary to answer.
