Fjell Product Design

People are constantly working on their mobile devices. I wanted to design a product, or a couple of products, that suit this lifestyle. I wanted to create something that makes the usage of these devices easier and more comfortable. On the other hand, the product had to look great, and even more, make your device look good.

Personally, I like everything organized. I am the person who would put my phone parallel with the sides of a table. Just because. Maybe it makes me feel better. I don’t know. So one thing I wanted to accomplish was to achieve a better looking way to charge my phone, so it wouldn’t just be lying somewhere randomly on my bedsidetable.

What else can you do with your phone these days, other than charging it? Video calling. Well, doesn’t it bother you that you have to hold your phone while you are Skyping or Facetiming with your mother? It bothers me. That’s why I wanted to add another function to the product I was dreaming of. It had to make life easier, by supporting the phone in one way or another during your video call, so you don’t have to hold it all the time.
Another thing I love, next to keeping things nicely organized, is watching a movie or working on my laptop in my bed in the evening. What I don’t like, is fighting with my laptop when I am sitting in my bed working on it. It just never seems to feel right, the way I use my laptop in a couch or bed. That’s why I wanted to think of a product that would solve this problem.

As I am a graphic designer and a photographer, I work a lot with a mouse and an external keyboard, or with a drawing tablet on my laptop. This means that I don’t use the keyboard on the laptop itself in those situations. I wanted to lift the screen in those situations, to have a more ergonomical workflow. Because if you think about it, we spend a lot of hours in front of our laptop screen. So it might as well be a little bit more comfortable.
So I wanted to design a few products that would make life easier, by solving these small problems I have with my devices. Of course I wanted to make them look really good. Because after all, what is function without form?
The products I made are Apple-related, just because those are the products I am currently using. So I am talking about an iPhone 5 and a Macbook Pro 13”.

I wanted to give the products a friluftsliv-feel, so I used the shape of a mountain as my basic concept. “Fjell” is Norwegian for mountain. Keep it simple!
