Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin (Russian: Ю́рий Алексе́евич Гага́рин) 9 March 1934 – 27 March 1968 was a Russian-Soviet pilot and cosmonaut. He was the first human to journey into outer space, when his Vostok (East) spacecraft completed an orbit of the Earth on 12 April 1961. Gagarin became an international celebrity, and was awarded many medals and titles, including Hero of the Soviet Union, the nation's highest honour. 
(Right) Valeri Borisovich Kharlamov (Russian: Валерий Борисович Харламов) 14 January 1948 – 27 August 1981) was an ice hockey forward who played for CSKA Moscow in the Soviet League from 1967 until 1981. Kharlamov was widely considered one of the best players of his era, despite never playing in the National Hockey League (NHL). Although small in stature, Kharlamov was speedy, intelligent and skilled. Teammates and opposing players considered him one of the best players in the world.

The 1980 Games were the first to be staged in Eastern Europe.
The only two cities to bid for the 1980 Summer Olympics were Moscow and Los Angeles. The choice between them was made on 23 October 1974 in the 75th IOC Session in Vienna, Austria.
Cheburashka (left bottom corner) (Russian: Чебура́шка) also known as Topple in earlier English translations, is a character in children's literature, from a 1966 story by Soviet writer Eduard Uspensky. He is also the protagonist (voiced by Klara Rumyanova) of the stop-motion animated films by Roman Kachanov (Soyuzmultfilm studio), the first film of which was made in 1969.
