Type design is defined as the “art and process of designing typefaces. It involves drawing each letterform using a consistent style.” Understanding and experiencing this design process is a wonderful journey. Each letterform has to be carefully weighed while using repetitive characteristics that are unique to that particular typeface. Spacing and tracking have to be carefully evaluated to ensure its usability success.
My font choice was to develop a fine-tuned unicase typeface. Aptly named “Techik” in honour of its rigid and precise nature. A font that echoes the perfection and training carried out when trying to excel in sports. As a way to promote the font and show it in use, I chose three sports that require precision and good form: mountain biking, snowboarding, and surfing. The goal was to capture each sport in moments of excellence. The headlines reflect the nature of the sport while being short, action-driven, and precise. The colour choices are vivid to accentuate the adrenaline of each sport.
