Pomegranate Media Testing - 6

After carrying out a few pages of pencil drawings I wanted to expand my media, just to see the effect different colours and compositions create and how they make me and my peers feel.
I started with watercolour, using bright pinks, yellows and oranges to really make the different sections of the pomegranate pop. For some of them I even changed the shape of the pomegranate completely, adding some abstraction. The feedback I got from my peers is that they preferred the more unusual looking paintings. Especially the one in the top left page with the annotation minimalist next to it.
I tried using green, purple and blue to add an even more abstracted feel to the pomegranates but once I did, I found the paintings lost their uniqueness. From then on I decided to stick to the pomegranates natural colour palette.
Since I had the time and the experience I decided to create a pomegranate lino cut. When sketching it out I made sure to keep it relatively simple, keeping the staple parts of the pomegranate (the seeds) with less detail so they would stand out. I found using just red ink worked best when it came to printing them, however I did enjoy mixing the inks to create an unusual almost tie dye effect.
The lino cut after being used and washed. I almost prefer this to the actual prints.
For the same reason I did lino cutting, I decided to make a few embroidery pomegranates. I used textiles in my first year at college for my final piece media so I had gained a lot of skills then. For these pieces I kept them relatively simple and abstract to save time. Once I had finished them I realised I didn’t quite have the same love for textiles as I did last year, this was disappointing to realise but it helped me cross off a media that I may have used for this years final piece.
Since I had so far stuck to familiar media, I wanted to try something new. I decided to pick mono printing with fabric. I ended up really liking the first print I did, the lines are clear but it has a fuzzy warmth to it. Despite liking the majority of the results I decided against using this as a possible media for my final piece as it didn’t have the variety I wanted.
Lastly, I decided to use the one media I know inside and out. Digitally drawing on Procreate. As expected this was my favourite process and I was in love with the results. The range of brushes and colour options on Procreate gives me the chance to create any texture or shape I want. I think the results are very charming, they have the perfect balance of attracting colours with contrasting patterns.

I will be using Procreate for more primary work in my project.
