Preamble

Designed by Edwin Lutyens, the Johannesburg Art Gallery (JAG) opened to the public in 1915. Meyer Pienaar Architects then added the modern extension in 1987 to house contemporary exhibitions. Although the extension is still structurally sound, a lack of funding and maintenance has led to extensive water damage and rendered the space unusable for its intended purpose.

The Brief

JAG and the Johannesburg Municipality have tasked you as a young, dynamic designer, with redesigning the modern extension.

You may either use the existing structure as a shell and redesign the interior layout, or design an entirely new space within the existing footprint. However, there is a modest budget attached to the project. Extravagant costs run the risk of being dismissed by the council.

The area needs to accommodate the following:
1. An interactive exhibition space for contemporary art.
2. A reception area to host events, capable of accommodating 200 people.
3. Back of house facilities such as toilets and kitchen should be considered, but do not need to be detailed or designed.
4. An outdoor area, using the existing courtyard adjoining the modern extension. The water feature may be remodelled or removed. However, the bronze statue cannot be moved or modified and must be incorporated into your design.
5. An income generator of your choice.
