ADV 93 Exercise 2: Packaging Project

In this project, we were assigned a group or individual celebrity with a new product trying to hit the market. I was assigned the famous rock band KISS with the new product of herbal tea. This was a very tricky task. Creating an herbal tea, which is very calm and enjoyable, and collaborating it with a hardcore 80s rock band. There were many steps I had to take to get to my final product research, sketch, design, and stage. My main object was to create a design that kept that KISS feeling since they are one of the world's most iconic brands. KISS besides the music is a brand that can stand on its own without the persona of a rock band. The main challenge was creating a herbal tea product that still had that iconic KISS feeling to it:

I then began to do research on KISS and Herbal Tea...

With all the information I obtained on KISS and Herbal Tea I then began doing a quick sketch concept of my ideas at that time.

My thought process on the sketches is the 2 main things KISS is known for as a brand besides being rock stars. Their logo and the individualism of each member. Face paint is one of the most iconic face makeup in human culture, they have TV show appearances and cartoon remakes but everyone still knows who they are.

After the sketches, I then began doing quick mockups with illustrator to get a foundation of my design...

When getting towards this stage of my project I understood that a lot of KISS-branded items become collector items. Such as KISS Pez dispensers, one member by themselves doesn't sell as much as the full collectors set. So my goal was to make a design that would make the fans need to collect them all to get the full set. I attempted to do this by including each individual member with the letter "KISS" on separate bags of herbal tea.

I then went on to create a full box layout for the KISS herbal tea line with details...

Each flavor of tea is named after one of their hit songs for example their is a "God Of Thunder" flavor. I also displayed a brief description of kiss and their backstory if there are new consumers interested in KISS.

Self Assessment:

Personally I had a great time with this project for a few reasons. I was thrown a brand and product I have never listened to or tried before. It was very interesting learning about KISS and herbal tea at the same time. It also introduced a new tool to me "Adobe 3d Stager", it was really interesting trying out stager and getting a feel for displays and lightings. Overall I enjoyed my time working on this project listening to KISS and creating a design for a new herbal tea line.
