Approach
Perhaps out of some animalistic instinct, I came up with "Divorce Horse" and "Lizard Wizard" for my rhyming pairs. Lizard wizard because they seem like the natural familiar of the sorcerer and Divorce Horse because the contrast between this goofy animal and a serious marital disjunction seemed ripe. Every trip into the herpetological arcane or acts equine estrangement begins in the sketchbook.
For our lizard wizard numerous interpretations were explored; What kind of lizard is a lizard wizard? are they the lizard wizard themselves or are they a lizard that wizard might have? What parts of the reptile could serve as a visual analogy for magecraft? The addition of a pointed cap with a star pattern proved itself necessary and the frilled lizards expression along with the Komodo claw grasping the scrying orb (sketches 5 and 7).
As for the Horses the idea of bridal gowns, tuxedos, torn polaroid photos and divorce papers all rushed to mind. In the sketches the shape of a (broken) heart appeared in the form their heads, which eventually made the final design.
Initially the lizard wizard design was more hand drawn with the pen tool, but was reworked to be more Iconographic with harder edges and mirrored forms.
