For this project, I was to take the first letter of my first name and turn it into a pattern. The ideal pattern would be unique, repeatable, and able to be used as a pattern on a variety of objects. The only constraint was that I only used the first letter of my first name for the pattern, utilizing font shapes to make it interesting.

The first step was to pick a typeface to use. I decided on Monotype Old English as I thought the font put many interesting serifs on the letter 'R' that I could use to make a good pattern. I then used this font and combined four 'R's in four preliminary patterns to choose from. I did this by either connecting each letter by a point on a serif or by reflecting and rotating the letters. This process created four designs that were all rather symmetrical, allowing my chosen final design to be repeated into a larger pattern later on. I ultimately chose the top right pattern for my final design, as I thought it would make a interesting pattern that had a good balance of positive and negative space.

The second step of this project was to chose a color scheme. To allow the full pattern to be both consistent, but still visually interesting, I decided on a monochromatic color gradient. Then, I colored the design in the two colors I thought would look best, blue and red, making each individual letter a slightly different shade. The color I picked in the end was blue, as I thought the red palette made the design too intense and a bit difficult to look at.

Finally, I created the full pattern by repeating the individual design multiple times. Keeping in mind the balance of space, I made each design not perfectly line up to the one next to it. Instead, each one is slightly offset, yet still even in the overall pattern. This allows the pattern to look more cohesive as a whole, as it does not necessarily look as if a individual design was simply copy and pasted multiple times.
