YMCA - Urban Site Study and Design
Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA
Wilshire Boulevard is a historic corridor known for its iconic architecture and strong ties to Hollywood. The Wilshire Boulevard Temple, the Bullocks Wilshire Building, La Fonda Restaurant and Hayworth Theatre are just a few of the famous landmarks found in this well celebrated location.  Named after Henry Gaylord Wilshire (1861-1927) who donated land to the City of Los Angeles based on the conditions that the boulevard be named after him and that there would be no railroad lines or industrial trucking.  This design seeks to introduce a new YMCA facility amidst the bustling district that will allow the public to come together and participate in community activities.
This YMCA design reflects the greater metropolis that surrounds it.  There are several distinct structures each with their own shape and design.  Each zone will be designated with a specific use and all areas will be easily accessible by a glass covered walkway.  A central atrium splits the facility giving users a grand meeting space that provides visual clues to each connected space.
An extensive urban site analysis was performed in the heart of Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles prior to the commencement of the design process.  Sun path, pedestrian footfall, wind patterns and vehicle movement were just a few of the many measurements taken along the historic concourse.  Local residents were also interviewed to get a better understanding of public spaces and their relationship to transitional pathways.  Site studies were completed on numerous architectural landmarks to compare and contrast design concepts and structural composition.
The project site is situated along two major thoroughfares which leads to perfect placement within the sight line of traffic.  The highly visible location will add to its attractiveness and help draw in people of all types.
The historic context of the location was also taken into consideration.  A wealth of museums and cultural institutions provide ample opportunity for visitors to partake in cultural experiences.  The nearby location of apartment buildings and condo complexes provide walking distance for residents to access the new facility.
Dormitories are located at the north-east corner and are capable of providing temporary or semi-permanent housing for young adults.  The rooms extend upwards in a tower like structure to take advantage of the amazing views of the neighborhood and help showcase the liveliness of the surrounding area.  Each room will serve as a studio space for a single residents to eat, study and rest.
A second floor dining area is situated at the south east corner so that patrons can watch as pedestrians shuffle back and forth from a busy day of sight-seeing.  Plenty of room is provided for dozens of guests to enjoy a well catered meal made fresh from within the dedicated kitchen space.
Just beneath the dining facility is a workout area which allows views from the outside. Those passing by will be able to catch a glimpse of the many activities offered within.  The space will be specifically designed for treadmills, weight machines, stationary bikes and other exercise equipment.  Adjoining rooms will be made available for sports activities like aerobics, yoga, pickleball, basketball, volleyball and so on.
A study and learning area will be located at the north side of the building.  This area will be more isolated allowing students to focus on their studies.  The space will be furnished with numerous private study desks, a computer room, a classroom and a small library.
