International Bitter Day

International Bitter Day's artworks approaching the Bauhaus era, avant-garde design of 1925s. The 'shuffle' packaging design itself, represent the modernism, a cultural movement whose origins lay as far back as the 1880s, and which had already made its presence felt in Germany before the World War, despite the prevailing conservatism. Influenced by the 19th century English designer William Morris, who had argued that art should meet the needs of society and that there should be no distinction between form and function.

This may be a cliche, but punk has always been about being oblivious to what other people say. And if that's what defines punk, Fami Redwan could be its most fitting spokesperson. Right off the bat, when we discussed about which artworks we could use as cover for this EP, he sternly said: "No picture of me" and we happily obliged. When majority of his peers from Makassarplay heavy metal, power pop or brit rock, Fami cut his teeth playing raga-tinged psychedelia with a dollop of, pardon the term, post-rock, that he writes, composes, sings and plays from his laptop, alone, probably in his bedroom.

When it comes to lyrics and language in general, he decided to break some if not all rules. In "Gegap Gulana" (which could go down as one of this year’s greatest titles of a pop song), Famiuses the word "Anjing" in place of "Angin," to make the phrase Tertiup Anjing (Instead of the usual Tertiup Angin or blown by the wind." Or the title "Membusuklah Bersamaku" which makes all lovey-dovey faux jazz tunes that currently tops the country's chart would sound like a lullaby written by a caveman.

When we first heard "Gegap Gulana" we knew that Fami had what it takes. This is what Gonjasufi did when he sampled the whole guitar line from one of ErkinKoray's most obscure tracks “Yagmur”. Gonjasufi made the guitar licks an integral part of his song. What Fami did in Gegap Gulana is more daring as not only that he snatched the sitar licks from a relatively unknown sitar player in India, he turns it into the signature sound that breaths new life into the composition.
