Loci: Instances of Tolerance-Part1

A place is a physical entity where memories can be contained and preserved; it is distinct from a mere site in that it is a collection of emotional attachments to a particular location (Heidegger). Places are collections of stories, articulations and an ever shifting constellation of trajectories (Massey). A place is also a socio-spatial construct (Dovey). The Shrine of Remembrance is therefore not a site; it is a place. It holds memories of war and sacrifice, peace, justice and patriotism. Associating this place of memory with a museum that celebrates the myriad of social and cultural fragments that constitute Melbourne’s identity; a museum of cultural and religious tolerance, transforms the identity of discriminatory colonialism associated with the Shrine into that of visionary religious and cultural tolerance; adding to the layers of memory. These series of instances or LOCI challenge, in a non-antagonistic manner, sectarianism , racism and intolerance in Australia which was the result of the idea that there must be one Australian identity and that of a particular kind.
Fragmenting the CBD Grid:

Grid x Grid x Grid = anti-grid (and thus a fragmented reality)
