What Sleeps Beneath - Identity

"What Sleeps Beneath is an online magazine that explores the horror genre as one of the most important cultural vehicles of our time. It is a home for all horror-loving nerds, and a space to investigate what the genre tells us about ourselves."

This is a project I worked on with a good friend who is deeply set into the world of horror as a genre. This online magazine has a tight group of passionate writers consuming horror media new and old, and analyzing them in weekly articles.

My job was to give life to the identity of the project. I was given a name and the overall plan for this grove on the web, but it needed a brand. Given the nature of the media,
I leaned into a dark overall identity and a modified blackletter typeface.
I provided two versions of the wordmark, one for general applications, and an emblem version using an abbreviation for small applications, to be used anywhere that the entire wordmark couldn't be easily read at a glance.

I also provided a short brand document outlining best practices with respect to logos, colours and imagery. I helped shape the visual identity with a series of images I sourced from Unsplash and edited into headers, matching the project's colour scheme.
Thanks for checking it out!
