Stephen BARTHE's profile

Anthropométrie : radiateur

Further to the discovery of Bernd and Hilla Becher’s work, of their very disciplined photographic series on water towers, I was attracted to the research for the picture of a repetitive and uniform weft. This led me to carry out a photographic series on the radiators of my school.

Like Bernd and Hillah Becher, I focused on the radiators of my school, all having the same shape, and thus photographed them as they are, by a tight centring, in black and white. The eye thus will be interested in the «decor» into which is plunged the radiator, in the elements, in the life which built itself up around each one.

The work of Bernd and Hillah Becher can only remind us the anthropometric research of Alphonse Bertillon, with a judicial purpose, who listed criminals thanks to photography, by their peculiarities and physical sizes.

I enjoyed, thus, afterwards classifying by criteria the radiators which I had photographed: degrees of luminosity of the radiator, degrees of luminosity of the whole image, or even degrees of visible surface of these.
