The design is inspired by a scene in the book but looks at the event from a more abstract/symbolic point of view, rather than simply depicting it literally. This plays a key part in the story: Arthur Geiger takes a smutty picture of Carmen Sternwood, but as he is doing so he is shot by Carmen’s lover. The two reactions occur simultaneously, and the photographic plate then becomes an object of ransom featuring heavily in the rest of the story. The design plays with the idea of multiple reactions triggered by a single cause.
