Phase 1: Interpretation, Arrangement

Welcome to the first Typography II project of the Spring 2024 semester!

For this assignment, we were randomly assigned onomatopoeic words, and mine happened to be "neigh." Our task was to thoroughly research the word, gaining a comprehensive understanding of its exact meaning. Subsequently, we were required to generate 15 sketches representing the essence of the word.

This is how it went...
More Research!

My professor reviewed my research and he encouraged me to go more into the Bible meaning of "neigh" which means "lustful desire". This would require a deep dive into sexualizing the word "neigh" to come up with more ideas for my typography. Which was challenging and definitely outside of my comfort zone but also a nice change in pace.
Typography can be so much more than just letters but also actions.
Digitized Layout for Phase 1.
For my final project, I decided to merge elements from both #3 and #4 of my second research. My aim was to encapsulate Jeremiah 5:8, particularly the phrase: "They are well-fed, lusty stallions, each neighing for another man's wife." I sought to embody the essence of the latter part, "each neighing for another man's wife," by metaphorically depicting the letters 'e' and 'g' as if they were lusting for each other, despite being next to/ close to their respective "significant others" (N and h). Additionally, I aimed to convey the action of sexual desire by physically manipulating the letters 'e' and 'h,' printing them out and cutting them up to create the illusion of movement.
