Midjourney Minilab 1: Peter Saville

These images are the outcome of silly little experiments using Midjourney in an attempt to better understand artificial creativity.

Generative AI now disrupts conventional ideas of authorship and creative control, introducing a paradigm where the artist transitions from a solitary genius to an active collaborator.
The imagination is deeply intertwined with human emotion and experience, which raises questions when expressed through artificial means; How do these deeply human factors manifest themselves in artificial creativity? What does artificial creativity look like compared to our own?

One way I’ve exploring this is by poking and prodding Midjourney to see how it responds to progressively increasing levels of abstraction. Here, I began experimenting with Permutation prompts, generating variations of a single image prompt. Using the remix function alongside permutation prompts,I could quickly cycle different combinations of style weights. adding more abstraction each cycle.

I drew inspiration from Peter Saville's work, which often conveys abstract and conceptual ideas through challenging traditional design norms. I incorporated stylistic traits of his work against 70's dreamscape, sci-fi and utopian scenes, before starting to increase the use of the --chaos parameter and negative-weighted prompts.
