SPAN stands for the Stellenbosch Public Art Network. It's a non-profit organisation supported by contributions from various individuals, foundations as well as corporations.The network brings contemporary art to a broad audience in Stellenbosch, this is done by mounting free exhibitions of international scope. This initiative offers powerful experiences that showcase the collaboration of art and the urban space.
The brief for this project was to rebrand SPAN. My concept focusses on both balance and connection within the art community and the public. It emphasises the idea "I think, therefore I am" . The first part of the quote focusses on the word "think" which describes the intellectual support from the organisation. The second part of the quote "therefore I am" which describes the act of being and creating the artworks.
My concept started with Newton's cradle, which is when two objects collide, the total momentum of the objects before the collision is equal to the total momentum after the collision. As you can see, the logo represents a scale, as the art cannot exist without the public and vice versa. It's a perfect balance.
