The B66 Chair stems from the observation of compressional strength that is inherent to cylinders. By adding rigidity to a flexible material, these chairs are easily assembled by rolling and folding them up.
It is held together by a single strap that is lashed through a series of flaps and buckled together. The felt is coated with polyester resin in certain areas to provide the structure.
In the early stages of designing the B66 Chair, I prototyped over 40 versions in paper at 1/3 scale to get the form and proportion correct. If the paper version showed promise, I would then prototype a scale version in 2mm wool felt.
I continued this process until I felt confident every detail had been resolved before moving on to half- and full-scale prototypes.
