AIRPORT LUGGAGE
TAG PROJECT
2023 spring
PROJECT BRIEF OVERVIEW

OBJECTIVES
• Learn to identify the essential characteristics (anatomy) of letterforms.
• Learn to see unique characteristics of letterforms across classifications.
• Explore and experiment with the potential of combining letterforms to create identity.
• Consider the balance/relationship of positive and negative space in a composition.
• Use thumbnail sketches and roughs to help synthesize and focus ideas begin to work with the “design process;”
• Use the process of drawing as a method to see and learn form.
• Develop preliminary designs and conceptualizations into a resolved project

PROJECT BRIEF
-Airport key codes (JFK, BER, LON, etc.): mark + application
-Combining three letters — create a strong and memorable typographic mark (letter mark).
-The solution should rely solely on typography.
-No additional shapes, symbols, ornaments, illustrations, or other graphic elements may be incorporated.
-The letter mark should be clearly recognizable, and the viewer must be able to read each letter in the intended sequence
(CHI reads as C, H, I).

Considerations
• Should the airport/city appear light or heavy? Consider history, geography and
culture (think signature or essential qualities)
• Should the letterform selections seem contemporary or traditional, static or active,
humanistic or geometric, or something else altogether?

COLOR PALETTES

Starting this project, it reminded me of the days I was in California; the pastel tones of sunset and the beach made me feel warm and want to visit once more.

For the first design, I didn’t want to make it seem like a common design but unique. I wasn’t sure if we were allowed to move or play around with the shapes and the details from the format, which led me focus more on the color palettes. California makes me think of sunset, beach, resorts, travel attractions, and Los Angeles (LA). So, I wanted to express the colors of those and ended up choosing these colors.

The second design was a bit simple compared to the first one, however, I thought it was better because it is a lot simpler and eye catching for the audience to understand the concept of the design and what it is made for. Most of the color palettes are not much common and is not from designs that are already been made. I was looking for uniqueness and wanted it to be outstanding compared to other designs.

THUMBNAIL SKETCHES
MID-POINT REFLECTION
As I was looking into my designs, I wanted to focus on the key points of Los Angeles, California. The most things that I wanted to point out was the sunset color palettes and the beautiful beaches they have. The sunset palettes are mostly orange, yellow, red or oat colors, while the beach color palettes are blue, green, greenish blue, sky-blue, or light bluish colors.

I thought that I have to put more time and effort which I heard it from the critique. I first thought that this project was about making a logo which was not intended for this project. So I struggled through those and figured that just a slight change from a normal letters might be better. I actually like the logos that I made which was much disappointing that I can’t even use it at all.
During the critiques and the thoughts, I got while going through the process, I figured that it is important to stick more on the concept of Los Angeles and concentrate more on the things that are related to the country, airport, I chose to present.
