Cotter Campground Interpretive Signage Project

Site of the signage project at the Cotter Campground, Australian Capital Territory.
Above: Outdated signage at the Cotter Campground.
The main sign beneath the shelter at the entrance to the campground is 3000mm x 1200mm. Final sign was produced by Screenmakers in Queanbeyan, printed on a single piece of 4mm aluminium and fitted to a multiframe fabricated specifically for the existing campground shelter.

The map on the main sign features nine key attractions within walking distance of the campground.
Each location is accompanied by a clear number indicator with totem guide to indicate available amenities, do's and dont's etc. The location of the three main rivers (Paddys, Cotter and Murrumbidgee) are shown along with major and minor roads.

The area beneath the main map provides simple, understandable information recommending activities to make a visit to the Cotter Recreational Precinct fulfilling and enjoyable.

The right hand side of sign is dominated by information for visitors pertaining to attractions beyond the immediate Cotter Recreational Precinct. A total of 18 assets are featured ranging for the Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve and Deep Space Centre to Gibralta Fall and Corin Dam.
The rear sign is the same dimension as the front at 3000mm x 1200mm but each panel is independent so as to facilitate easy change if needed. As with the front, signs were produced by Screenmakers of Queanbeyan on 4mm aluminium and fitted within a mulitframe fabricated specifically for the existing Cotter campground shelter.
The centre panel is designed specifically for a younger audience. It features four animal categories (birdlife, ground animlas, aquatic creatures and pests) with fun facts and Did you know? information interspersed throughout the sign in order to engage and entertain young visitors. It is intended that this sign be the precursor to a fold-out pamphlet that young visitors can use in a 'spotto' scenario during their stay at the campground.

The left hand panel aims to inform visitors about specific seasonal issues. Each section (four in total devoted to each season) advises of sunrise and sunset times, minimum and maximum temperatures, seasonal flora and fauna, the best activities for the time and safety and wellbeing issues relevant to that time of year. It's intended that while younger visitors will most likely be engaged by the centre panel, mums and dads will read and pass on the information gleaned from the left (and right) panels within the sign.
The right hand panel caps off the sign by covering historical information pertinent to the Cotter River Catchment. It introduces history buffs to important and influential characters from the region and explains how the Cotter River was an important factor in the decision to locate the capital of Australia to Canberra. A large part of this panel is devoted to a map which illustrates how water from the Cotter River Catchment gets to the city of Canberra. It's intended that while younger visitors will most likely be engaged by the centre panel, mums and dads will read and pass on the information gleaned from the right (and left) panels within the sign.
