Manipur Extends Internet Ban
The Manipur government on Tuesday extended Internet Ban for an additional five days, till November 5, in an effort to stop anti-social elements from spreading destructive words, images, and videos.
After Chief Minister N. Biren Singh recently said that the administration would think about lifting the restriction in the coming days, the Home Department prolonged the mobile Internet ban twice in less than a week.
During a government function last week, Singh asked the public for patience, especially from students and young people.Following the protests by students last month, the Manipur government again halted mobile Internet data services and internet/data services on September 26, two days after the ban was restored after 143 days. The suspension was then prolonged every five days.
Security Concerns in Manipur
The boycott was stretched out because of “misgivings that a few enemy of social components could utilize virtual entertainment broadly for transmission of pictures, disdain discourse, and disdain recordings prompting the interests of thepublic which might have serious repercussions on the law and order situation,” according to a notification from the Home Department on Tuesday.

On October 30, the Director General of Police stated that there were still reports of public demonstrations against the use of central security forces, public gatherings, meetings at different local clubs and block levels, and attempts to break into the homes of elected officials and leaders of civil society organizations.
In the notification, Commissioner of Home T. Ranjit Singh expressed, “… there is trepidation that a few enemy of social components could utilize web-based entertainment broadly for transmission of pictures, disdain discourse, and disdain video messages prompting the interestsof the public which might have serious repercussions for the law and order situation in the state of Manipur.”
Following the ethnic violence that started on May 3, mobile internet usage was outlawed statewide. Although the ban was removed on September 23, it had to be reinstated on September 26 due to confrontations between students and security personnel after pictures of the bodies of two young students—a girl among them—went viral on social media.
