The Roo – History, Tradition and Iron

As part of Chancellor C. Mauli Agrawal’s investiture, the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) Student Government Association gifted the school with an iron kangaroo statue by noted artist Tom Corbin, providing campus with a beautiful physical representation of the university’s mascot, the Roo.

To announce its arrival and share the rich legacy of student-driven traditions, we created a four-minute video to show students during convocation in the fall. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, convocation was virtual for the first time in school history. Our goal for the video was not only to get students excited about this stunning piece of art, but also to inspire school spirit and camaraderie while we are all forced to spend so much time apart.

The video included interviews with the artist, students and a university historian; footage of the construction of the Roo; and items from the university archives.
