Concurso de ilustración ISIL: "La Playlist de mi vida"
Les comparto la historia de mi participación y proceso creativo en el concurso de Cuentos Ilustrados, realizado por ISIL.
En una semana ajetreada por trabajo, llegó a mi correo la invitación a participar en un concurso de cuentos ilustrados, realizado por ISIL. Me llamó la atención y mi ilustradora interior tomó acción para hacer que las cosas sucedan y organizar mi agenda para poder asistir a las sesiones presenciales de capacitación. Hacía mucho tiempo que no participaba en un concurso, menos de ilustración y sentía que mis habilidades se estaban "oxidando" de no usarlas debido a mi trabajo diario como diseñadora. Mi objetivo principal era poder participar para aprender, actualizarme y tener recuerdos de la experiencia.🎨✨ Me pregunté ¿qué podré ser capaz de crear?

In a busy week for work, the invitation to participate in an illustrated story contest, held by ISIL, arrived in my email. It caught my attention and my inner illustrator took action to make things happen and organize my schedule to be able to attend the in-person training sessions. It had been a long time since I participated in a contest, especially in illustration, and I felt that my skills were getting "rusty" from not using them due to my daily work as a designer. My main goal was to be able to participate to learn, update myself and have memories of the experience.🎨✨ I asked myself, what will I be able to create?
Clases de capacitación - Training classes
Para preparanos y tener los conocimientos necesarios para realizar la ilustración, tuvimos 5 sesiones semanales con el artista y profesor Cesar Caycho, quien admiro su trabajo y el nivel de detalle en cada una de sus piezas. Me emocionó poder aprender de él y retarme a nivel artístico.
Así mismo, a cada participante nos dieron diferentes cuentos a ilustrar y aunque no logré conectar con el primero, luego elegí el que me inspiró a realizar la ilustración de portada: "Do,re,mi,fa,sol, una canción en cada estación", escrito por Luna Fontana.

To prepare ourselves and have the necessary knowledge to make the illustration, we had 5 weekly sessions with the artist and professor Cesar Caycho, an artist who I admire his work and the level of detail in each of his pieces. I was excited to be able to learn from him and challenge myself on an artistic level.
Likewise, each participant was given different stories to illustrate and although I was not able to connect with the first one, I later chose the one that inspired me to make the cover illustration: "Do,re,mi,fa,sol, a song in each season ", written by Luna Fontana.
Bocetos - Sketches
Primera vez que me animaba a ilustrar la carátula de un cuento, sumado a que era una historia que no había creado. Pensar cómo era la mejor manera de contar visualmente la historia de la autora, fue un reto. Realicé 3 propuestas de bocetos, buscando ordenar y pulir mis ideas. Como me gustó mucho su historia y las canciones que están en el cuento, vinieron diversas ideas a mi mente. Quería que se sintiera un ambiente mágico, orgánico y fluído como su narración. Y aunque quizás pase desapercibido, la nota musical que parece mariposa es en realidad las dos "B" que aparecen en el logo del grupo musical "ABBA" cuya canción "Our Last Summer " figura en la historia. Detrás de todo gran trabajo hay un proceso creativo que es importante para mí compartir.

First time I was encouraged to illustrate the cover of a book, added to the fact that it was a story that I had not created. Thinking about the best way to visually tell the story of the author, was a challenge. I made 3 sketch proposals, seeking to organize and polish my ideas. Since I really liked her story and the songs that are in, various ideas came to my mind. I wanted it to make it feel magical, organic and fluid like her narration. And although it may go unnoticed, the musical note that looks like a butterfly is actually the two "B"s that appear in the logo of the musical group "ABBA" whose song "Our Last Summer" appears in the story. Behind all great work there is a creative process that is important for me to share.
Ilustración pasada a cartulina y entintada. Sin lugar a dudas, la parte del proceso que más disfruté. Existe una magia en pasar tus ideas a "limpio". Utilicé marcadores de tinta china para que no se afectara el trazo cuando le pase los colores acuarelables.

Illustration transferred to cardboard and inked. Without a doubt, the part of the process that I enjoyed the most. There is magic in getting your ideas “clean.” I used ink markers so that the line would not be affected when I applied the watercolor colors.
Proceso del pintado, utilizando mis colores acuarelables🎨
Este paso fue importante, pues al lado izquierdo hice unas pruebas con colores en una copia de la ilustración original. Quería aterrizar mejor mis ideas de color y combinaciones antes de pasarlo a la ilustración final.

This step was important, because on the left side I did some color tests on a copy of the original illustration. I wanted to better ground my ideas of color and combinations before moving it to the final illustration.
La ilustración entintada con el color al 100%. Me emocionó explorar y experimentar nuevas técnicas con las acuarelas de color y volver a utilizar mis queridos colores que tenía guardados hace un tiempo. El trabajo fue demandante y me tomó toda una mañana culminarlo.

The illustration inked with 100% color. I was excited to explore and experiment with new techniques with colored watercolors and re-use my beloved colors that I had saved for a while. The work was demanding and it took me a whole morning to finish it.
Edición y ajustes a la ilustración en Photoshop, asi mismo también utilicé Illustrator para agregar algunos detalles que sumaran valor a la portada del cuento.

Foto del último día de clases, donde todos los participantes junto al profesor posamos con nuestros trabajos. Fueron 5 semanas llenas de aprendizajes y valiosas experiencias. Como ilustradora, he podido aprender nuevas técnicas y plasmar mejor mis ideas. El reto de ilustrar una historia que no es mía ha sido uno de los aprendizajes mas valiosos que he tenido y cada recuerdo de la experiencia ha sido memorable.

Photo from the last day of classes, where all the participants together with the teacher posed next to our work. They were 5 weeks full of learning and valuable experiences. As an illustrator, I have been able to learn new techniques and a better way to capture my ideas. The challenge of illustrating a story that is not mine has been one of the most valuable learnings I have had and every memory of the experience has been memorable.
