Elements and Principles

Emphasis is bringing the viewer’s attention toward an object within, the object becomes the focal point of the picture. The object has contrast compared to the rest of the space. Emphasis can be made with colour, shape, texture, blur etc. The object obtains dominance and demands for your attention, the rest of the picture is usually negative space.

Harmony conveys a satisfied sensation to the viewer. The image conveys a soothing feel, where the audience feels calm while observing the picture. The image is usually some sort of nature photograph. Some examples could be a sunset with a walkway of light across the ocean, the lower angle of a cluster of trees directing towards the sky or even some fascinating patterned leaves.

Volume uses light and angles to convey the depth and fullness it strives to achieve. Shadows, repetition and use of space all work in the effect of volume. The layers of the image create the different aspects that the viewer can analyse.
