Fashion Illustration

As part of a contemporary illustration research project, we were asked to create an illustration based on two contemporary illustrators of our choosing. I decided to choose Kelly Smith (known for her attention to detail pencil illustrations) and Kate Wilson (a fashion illustrator from London). Because I have studied Fashion Illustration in the past, I decided to concentrate on this area.

This was my first fashion illustration after a four year break.
Working it out - first sketch.

First, I found a photograph of a runway model from a couture show to model my illustration from. Then I decided what characteristics from Kelly and from Kate I should focus on. Kelly Smith is very feminine and attention to detail orientated, and Kate focusses predominantely on the fashion and not so much the model themselves. I decided to create an illustration with the focus on the garment and then a detailed pencil illustration of the eyes. The hands and face were left blank - a reference to Kate Wilsons illustrative style.
Mapping out colours and patterns.
Watercolour render. Gouache on watercolour paper.
The eyes. Pencil on paper.
Digital render of the final illustration using Adobe Photoshop.
Final piece.
