Objective
Our task was to communicate a literacy theme using only abstract, graphic, and geometric shapes. I created a book cover with only black and white to correspond with the novel's literacy subject; the temptation of evil.
Process
Shape
I started off sketching shapes that relate to the idea of evil tempting somebody. I created a Mandela shape to represent a spiraling feeling when being tempted by an evil force. The "evil eye" can also be interpreted judging by the thick black strokes on the white circles.
Type
I wanted to choose a font that was dense and loud. I chose Arial Black and skewed the type. I layered black and white text together to create a slight 3D effect. I chose Neue Haas Grotesk Display Pro (16) for "temptation" to layer and create a whispering effect behind the shape and title. I also used this font for the author's name.
Hybrid / Final
Layered all the type and shape together in a 6x9 format. I added a black boarder to complete the final book cover.
