ISTD, The Women of Homer - Briseis

For the 2021 ISTD Briefs, I chose Brief 3 - shaping the world. The Brief asked to pick a book from "100 Book that changed the world" and I chose the Iliad and the Odyssey. I have always had a great Interest in the Books and the epic stories that Homer portraits, but in my spin of the story I wanted to explore the female characters that often are unfairly pictured in modern translations of the story. In my research I found that Homer was quite the feminist for his time, including female characters that showed strength, pride and wits. Often these characteristics and the complexity of these characters were not included in translations. I wanted to create Book series that was focused on the female characters and their story, giving them a stage they had been denied for so long.
The Idea for "the women of Homer" is to have several volumes, each looking at a different female character. This is an example of Briseis.

For the Visual language I was Inspired by the night sky, which was at the centre-point of ancient greek society, and traditional ancient greek design patterns.

The Book would be B6 sized, have thick papyrus like paper, with an exposed spine and deckled edges.
