Suds and Soccer

“Suds and Soccer” is the product of my recent collaborative project as part of QUT’s School of Design Intensive Lab DYB102 2023.
Partnering with the incredible organisation Orange Sky Australia, and working along side wonderful team members Jelliane Corpuz, Harold Corser, Stephanie John and Raquel Santiago Ramalhete, we responded to two problem statements:

a)    Young Australians are now the fastest growing segment of people experiencing homelessness, hardship and loneliness.

b)    The stereotypes of homelessness portrayed in society contribute to the stigmatisation and marginalisation of friends experiencing homelessness.

As a group, we wanted to improve the current Orange Sky shift program to create more opportunities for social and emotional interactions within young Australians experiencing hardship.

“Suds and Soccer” works as a low-cost program for young Australians to benefit from the physical and mental wellness effects of team sports and social connection and acts as an icebreaker that breaks down stigma and marginalisation of homelessness portrayed in society.

It was understood that different mentalities contribute to the lack of youth participation during Orange Sky shifts. Though, an attitude affected by past privilege, social norms and expectations hinder the likelihood of young people asking for help or reaching out to services like Orange Sky.

However, through this program, youth participation is encouraged whether it be international students, university students or any young person experiencing hardship. The immediate effects include a sense of belonging, physical wellness and relief, human connections, hygienic clothing and access to essential facilities.
