Project type: Typeface design

Brief: Create a bespoke typeface that is inspired by a particular location in London. 

Concept:  Type is all around us, there’s no avoiding it. In a capital city like London, its presence contributes to the ambitent ‘noise’ of the city streets. It can be loud and obnoxious, friendly and inviting, distracting and abrasive, trustworthy and serious, informative and directive, abrupt and sharp or completely conspicuous and out of place. 

There is a craft and beauty to traditional letterforms carved from stone. Walking around London, the old mixed with the new, sparked an idea to make a modern design of a traditionally stone carved kind of alphabet. Glass and steel and the modern architecture of the city was a juxtaposition against the signage and coats of arms seen in this area. This is what London is all about. A huge mix. Everything sitting next to one another in a buzzing, busy culture of society and work… Welcome to London!
