My degree project is an illustrated version of 2001 a Space Odyssey. Although the book was published after the sci-fi movie of the same title, my visual interpretation is based on the book and my own visions inspired by the written work.
My illustration aim to complement the empty space
between chapters and to evoke the atmosphere of the novel.

The jacket contains the Introduction and it's also transformable into an A3 size poster

This is how the unfolded jacket looks like

I was mostly inspired by the high contrast of the hostile envoronment of space – nasa.gov

I have been impressed by Gyula Derkovits’s woodcuts, since I was a highschool student.
A farely new source of inspiracion have been the mangas of Tsutomo Nihei, like the Biomega

At first I scanned the compositions from the sketched layout

Then I made a raw version of the final composition

After finalising te composition I just, had to improve the drawing

When an illustration was finished, I scanned it in 1200 dpi, I scaled it up to fit to the pages and made it bitmap in order to achieve that black & white look that I wanted

By clicking this link you can watch the drawing process

The final page number of the book is 288. Its only 4 pages
longer than the original, but in the same time it has 44 illustrations
in it which the original edition is lack of

I spent 260 work hours on this book, which is
65 hours longer than the Apollo 11 mission

Special thanks
