2009 Black History Month T-Shirt Design

In celebration of Black History Month, I created a new t-shirt thatmarries past to present after our most exciting PresidentialInauguration. The t-shirt very simply notes three crucial moments inthe civil rights history of all African Americans.

"Rosa Sat"
RosaParks was an African American civil rights activist whom the U.S.Congress later called the "Mother of the Modern-Day Civil RightsMovement".

On December 1, 1955 in Montgomery, Alabama, Parksrefused to obey bus driver James Blake's order that she give up herseat to make room for a white passenger. Her action was not the firstof its kind: Irene Morgan, in 1946, and Sarah Louise Keys, in 1955, hadwon rulings before the Supreme Court and the Interstate CommerceCommission respectively in the area of interstate bus travel. Butunlike these previous individual actions of civil disobedience, Parks'action sparked the legendary Montgomery Bus Boycott.

Parks's actof defiance became an important symbol of the modern Civil RightsMovement and Parks became an international icon of resistance to racialsegregation. She organized and collaborated with civil rights leaders, including boycott leader Martin Luther King, Jr., helping to launch himto national prominence in the civil rights movement.

"King Walked"
MartinLuther King Jr. was an American clergyman, activist and prominentleader in the African-American civil rights movement. His main legacywas to secure progress on civil rights in the United States and he isfrequently referenced as a human rights icon today.

A Baptistminister, Dr. King became a civil rights activist early in his career. He led the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott and helped found the SouthernChristian Leadership Conference in 1957, serving as its first president.

King'sefforts led to the 1963 March on Washington, where King delivered his“I Have a Dream” speech. There, he raised public consciousness of thecivil rights movement and established himself as one of the greatestorators in U.S. history.

"Obama Ran"
And asthey say, the rest is history. Little known Illinois Senator Barack H.Obama shocked the world and galvanized the democratic party in hisswift bid to become the next President of the United States. After asweeping victory at the polls in November of 2008, President Obama wasinaugrated on January 20, 2009 in Washington D.C. For many AfricanAmericans, those who fought in the civil rights movement and stillcontinue to do so, it was an important moment in history to see a blackman take the highest seat of power in the country.
