The institute's design has been heavily impacted by the site's form. The majority of the larger buildings have river views. The location slopes toward the Sabarmati River and is on its west bank. The current elevation is 2.51 meters below the high flood level from 1875.

Because of this, the entire structure is elevated, with the main floor rising 3.24 meters above the ground. Thus, 9570 square meters of floor space are made available on the ground floor, which can be profitably used for common areas, canteens, and the storage of raw materials like wood, iron, and steel that won't get damaged by the occasional flood.

The NID plan denotes a variety of spatial experiences with various "spatial types," including a pen courtyard with a thoroughfare, a raised platform type, a colonnade type facing green spaces, multiple entrances, a formal entrance court with a brick shell, and, finally, a grid that unites the entire composition. The organization's openness and the plan's stunning spatial non-hierarchy are both on exhibit. The intricate partition wall modulations produced a maze with a variety of sensations. The phrase "free plan" is represented by the plan's transparency. The placement of a historic monument near the main structure, which serves as the backdrop for an amphitheater, is another intriguing contrast. The coexistence of the new and the old produces a dynamic compositional equilibrium.
