Little White Lies Magazine - Super 8

In answer to a brief by Little White Lies magazine for the D & AD competition 2012 to design a cover that depicted an iconic image of the main character, this project allowed me to explore the things I enjoyed most about my childhood.  I grew up making home movies and watching films like Star Wars, Close Encounters and reading sci fi comics.  Super 8, set in the late 70's itself reflected these experiences and was made with reverance to those late 70's/early80's films.  Wanting to include some of the visual references from the film while still designing a contemporary cover, I chose a comic book illustrative style for the facial image and a font that was used for film posters of the time.  I explored the 3D cube image and mapped the main character's face on top.  As this made the facial image unclear, I decided to dispense with the cube and experiment with the face.  Altering colour and lighting using Photoshop, I finally settled on the images below for my entry.  The lighting and composition are meant to reflect film merchandise of the 70's/80's and also suggest the sci fi subject matter.
