City Branding | Lisboa

This challenge arises from the question of how best to represent a city through a logo. It is understood that the primary rule to adhere to is that the logo must be effective, innovative, simple, legible, and easy to remember.

Therefore, the objective was to simplify the process by creating a modern, contemporary, and historically significant logo for the city of Lisbon, while prioritizing simplicity. The logo was constructed solely using typography, without any illustrations. Subsequently, symbols were incorporated to reflect the various themes associated with the city. In its different variations, the logo also possesses versatility, allowing for alternative versions to be selected. Through these ideals, a logo emerges that not only represents the city but also narrates a story.
The concept of playing with a simple typography also enables the audience to interpret each letter in their own way, fostering an engagement with the theme and creating a connection that stems from the exploration and discovery of Lisbon's unmistakable features.
Lisbon boasts numerous viewpoints scattered throughout the city, offering breathtaking vistas. From these vantage points, we can always marvel at various panoramas.

We realize that what surrounds us and also represents Lisbon are its characteristic houses. In a panoramic view, it is impossible to observe all the intricate details. What stands out the most are the rooftops and their diverse shapes. Therefore, the letter "A" represents each house in the city.
The Carris de Ferro Company of Lisbon is one of the public passenger transport networks in the Portuguese capital, operating since 1872. Many of us rely on trams to explore numerous enchanting and historically significant sites or simply to take leisurely strolls.

Due to its pivotal role in the city of Lisbon, the letter "O" depicts and represents this distinctive mode of transportation within the city.
The following letter was conceived from the elegant curves of the "S," which transformed into an equally simple and cohesive "B."

This letter evokes the seagulls that soar above Lisbon, immersing us in the memory of witnessing them in flight while basking in the beauty of a riverside sunset.
The Tagus River originates in Spain and flows into the Atlantic Ocean, forming an estuary in Lisbon. In order to connect elements of the capital to typography, it was essential to represent the revered Tagus.

The letter "S" signifies, in a straightforward manner, the river that is traversed by the two bridges of the capital, from which the ships and caravels set sail during the Portuguese Age of Discoveries. It also represents the wave that profoundly affected Portugal on the day of the 1755 earthquake.
The bridges of Lisbon span the magnificent Tagus River. Two significant structures symbolize the city: the 25th of April Bridge and the Vasco da Gama Bridge.

Hence, by utilizing the sequence of letters "L" and "I" and their identical strokes, we represent these contemporary architectural marvels that epitomize our capital.
The city is greatly characterized by its radiant sun, by its light. We can witness its sunrise and sunset from any point in the city, and these moments always evoke a warm and comforting sensation, awakening various emotions within us.

Therefore, we incorporated a small circle preceding the word in the logo to represent the city's sun. It is a symbol that connects with the word "Lisboa," as it is the sun that nurtures and embraces all the people who pass through it.
