Martin Luther King Jr. Civil Rights Memorial

CIVIL RIGHTS MEMORIAL

On February 15, 1957 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Reverend A.L. Davis led a landmark meeting that helped establish the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, a group that played a large role in the civil rights movement to follow.  This memorial and museum pays tribute to this occasion and many other unrecognized events (including marches and boycotts in the name of civil rights) that ocurred in New Orleans during the civil rights movement.  The memorial is a park along the neutral ground of Simon Bolivar St in Central City, the site of many relevant civil rights activities.  The park could eventually connect multiple gathering places located at these various sites; the one shown here is placed prominently to attract the attention of passing cars.
Along the park are benches and signage.  Many of them would be given over to local artisans, allowing them to depict their interpretation of the events.  The remaining signage, and the signage within the gathering spaces, would be used as teaching opportunities - showcasing artifacts and information about the era.
