"Courante - A piece of music written in triple time."

Courante is a prototypical approach to the exploration of sound and music through interativity. It combines three different modules, each based on an existing instrument to create an aesthetically pleasing and simple piece.

The project started with a want to increase the interactivity not only between products and their users but also between the users themselves. The modules are designed to be easy to use by anyone and everyone, no matter what their background is.
A dulicmer inspired section featuring 3 steel strings. The strings are not tuned to a scale or chord, their notes are determined by the shape of the module. This makes for a unusual sound that encourages the user to question and explore the piece by adjusting the pitch of each string to see how they can create different sounds.
An mbira themed sections with wooden tines. The mbira is a very simple musical instrument from Africa, where music plays a strongly communal role, bringing people together under a common interest. The strong rhythms accosiated with African and their attitude to how it is created/played is something that interest me. It's also someting that I wanted to encourage through this project.
This module is based on the principles of a cajon. Another simple instrument that uses percussive, wooden faces to create the drumming beats that drive forward a lot of music. The four faces each make a slightly different sound, when this is combined with different methods for hitting the faces it becomes a very versatile instrument. The furthest right face also has a loose corner that creates a slapping sound, similar to that of a snare.
