The proposed architectural project is a 12-story tower that will house an architecture school in downtown Pomona. The primary focus of the design is on ensuring the security, both emotional and physical,of the occupants, while also emphasizing the importance of light transition within the tower.
The plinth serves as the foundation element for the tower and is designed to create a unique hugging shape that balances the indoor and outdoor spaces. The emotional security of the occupants is addressed through the plinth’s hugging shapes that can be seen in the canopy entrance and the tower itself. Physical security is addressed by strategically placing the entryway on the quieter side of the tower to provide additional security for the occupants. The design incorporates balconies with overhangs and rooms with large glass walls and holes in the floors to provide visual connections between spaces while maintaining privacy. The balconies’ doors, along with any door leading to an outdoorbspace, are rotated glass doors that can be used as both windows and doors, offering flexibility. The balconies themselves provide views of all the surrounding streets while minimizing blind spots
In addition to security, the project emphasizes the importance of light transition within the tower. The design is carefully crafted to maximize natural light and promote an efficient flow of circulation. This ensures that the occupants are not only safe but also have a comfortable and productive environment to work in.
Overall, the proposed project seeks to provide a safe and secure educational environment in a high-crime-rate area like downtown Pomona, which has a lively nightlife that can impact students, particularly those studying architecture who may need to spend long hours or even overnight in the studio. The design also takes into account the importance of promoting a sense of connection to the surrounding urban landscape through thoughtful consideration of light and circulation.
