The Roots of Scotland's Landscape

Emerging from her love of landscape and nature photography, Kate’s BA project ‘The Roots of Scotland’s Landscape’ tells the story of Scotland’s forests and their origins.

The project explores the work of Forestry and Land Scotland, including the creation of woodland in Moray, the Highlands, and the Cairngorms and how these locations are utilised. This stems from a love of the outdoors and has provided the opportunity to capture beautiful landscapes whilst expanding knowledge on them.

The project ‘Coast’ is a monochromatic collection of images, featuring fishing villages along the Moray coast. The intention of this project was to uncover reminders of bygone times and the rich history that remains.

Darkroom process is an area Kate explored throughout her time at Gray’s School of Art, Lith techniques provide the vintage appeal of historic photographs she was drawn to whilst researching. She has also incorporated other historical aspects into her work by analysing and creating 1930s style postcards as a way to display her photographs.

Kate’s landscapes take a fine art approach, focused on the aesthetic qualities of nature, intended to transport the viewer to the location photographed. Through this project, she hopes to convey the wild feeling of Scottish woodland, the serene feeling of the Moray coast, and a sense of the past through her atmospheric Lith prints.
