Hidden Figures of Monotype

Hidden Figures
My project follows the story of the ‘Invisible Women of Monotype’ who edited male designers typefaces and produced variants but were never given credit - the project was completed using Times Bold, which was adapted from the initial sketches by the women of the type drawing offices. However, ironically, every single typeface in the college letterpress room was credited to a man. The foundry Monotype recruited exclusively from girls aged 16-18 who had attended grammar schools because they could pay them less than men.

My final poster was made by layering risographs of archival images from Monotype workshops, the index of the college type foundry, and letterpress.
