CHARLESTON MUSEUM OF THE CITY
Fall 2012
Environment Studio
NC State University
Instructor: Sara Queen
This museum celebrates the rich history of Charleston, SC's intricate urban and architectural fabric. The design utilizes a conceptual "Four Walls" architectural approach, in which a Wall of Books, a Wall of light, a Wall of the Surveyor, and a Wall of the City are formally integrated to express the city's urban rhythm in an overall sensory experience for the visitor. The city's street grid shifts along Water Street, where the museum is located (intersection of Water and Church Streets), informing the shifting grid of the museum's structural framework that make up the Wall of the Surveyor. Visitors pass through the massive Wall of Books underneath this shifting structure before a final release into the garden and reflecting pool.
