The Beginning of a dream called Backpacking Football
In 2013, my brother and I decided to head to the old continent and backpack around Europe for 20 days and watch La Liga, the Premier League and Champions League football. We started in Madrid, where we saw Ronaldo and Messi go head to head at the Clasico. We witnessed Sir Alex Ferguson coach his last Champions League match at Old Trafford. We witnessed The Kop sing ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ at Anfield. We watched Messi lead Barcelona to a historic 4-0 comeback against AC Milan. And we watched Malaga move on to the quarterfinals by defeating FC Porto at La Rosaleda. An absolutely amazing trip, but we couldn’t have done it without the help of all those friends who let us crash at their places and took us under their wing for a true local fan experience.
